Affordability
The cost of everything, from food to housing to healthcare, have skyrocketed in recent years. The state legislature must use all the levers of power, including reforming the tax code, to make daily life more affordable.
Local Institutions
Modern life is stressful. Local institutions, like the fire department, emergency services, and libraries, provide essential services as well as peace of mind. Supporting them makes our communities safer, healthier, and more prosperous.
Education
Public education is the foundation of this great country, but in West Virginia it is underfunded and underappreciated. We must fix the funding formula, focus on what works, and listen to expert advice so we can meet the needs of every student. Limitations also need to be put on the Hope Scholarship to ensure that the money is going to those with a financial need and the money is staying in West Virginia.
Agriculture
The state flag features both a farmer and a coal miner and we need to do a better job of representing the interests of our agricultural producers. Farming can drive economic development by tying vocational education, entrepreneurship, and the bioeconomy together. Small businesses focused on producing food, fibers, and energy will bring West Virginia into the 21st Century.
Economic Development
The extractive industries will continue to be a major factor in West Virginia’s economy, but we must ensure that they remain viable while supporting the communities they’re located in. We can balance economic development with protecting clean water and protecting the natural beauty that also fuels the economy through tourism. The same is true for newer industries connected to cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, and data centers.
Final Thoughts
We must restore civility and integrity to our political system, joyfully embrace our diverse cultures, and be mindful of the challenges facing the natural world. I pledge to you, the people of Grant and Tucker, to be fair, civil, ethical, professional and conservation-minded in all my interactions, and to encourage others in the political realm to do the same.
We all need to work together! So…..please, reach out!
